What is NComputing?
In simple and my words NComputing is a new revolution in Computing World which made computing much more simpler, compact, and efficient in case of performance and money wise in a short span.
Definition from Wikipedia:-"NComputing" is a desktop virtualization company that manufactures hardware and software to create virtual desktops which enable multiple users to simultaneously share one computer.
The name "NComputing" comes from the mathematical term "n" which stands for an indefinite number (in this case) of additional users sharing a single computer.
NComputing, based in Redwood City, CA is a privately held for-profit company with offices in the United States, Australia, Canada, China, Germany, India, Korea, Poland, Russia, and the United Kingdom; and resellers around the world.
Basic concept behing NComputing Desktop Virtualization
We’ve all become accustomed to the PC model, which allows every user to have their own CPU, hard disk, and memory to run their applications. But personal computers have now become so powerful that most people can’t possibly use all the processing power they purchase.Problem of current Computing is that they consume too much electricity and generate too much e-waste. A typical PC takes 110 watts to run, and there are almost a billion of them on the planet. And according to the Silicon Valley Toxics Commission, e-waste is the fastest growing part of the waste stream. Up to 95%of PC power is wasted. On the other hand,NComputing access device uses only 1 watt, weighing 100gm that give each user their own rich PC experience.
NComputing desktop virtualization is a modern take on the time-honored concept where multiple users share the processing power of a single computer. This approach has several advantages over the traditional PC model, including lower overall costs, better energy efficiency, and simplified administration.
NComputing-Next Step to SBC(Server Based Computing) or Thin-Client
NComputing is based upon SBC or thin-client,A thin client (sometimes also called a lean or slim client) is a computer or a computer program which depends heavily on some other computer (its server) to fulfill its traditional computational roles.
But there is difference, clients acts as dummy terminals in Thin-Client on the other hand in NComputing access devices which are actual system are INTELLIGENT dummy terminals which executes several processes including boot management, initialization, network connection, protocol decoding, bitmap cache acceleration, and administration. This approach results in access devices with very low power requirements (less than 5 watts). This enables significant power savings when compared to individual PCs that
draw over 100 watts each. NComputing software(i.e.vSpace) is easy to install and use, relatively in traditional Thin-Client or SBC software is complex and highly administration knowledge needed.
NComputing Overview
How it Works?
The unique NComputing technology is composed of three primary components:
vSpace™ virtualization software, a user extension protocol, and access devices.By combining all three of these components into an integrated solution,NComputing delivers unmatched performance at an incredibly low cost.
vSpace desktop virtualization software
NComputing vSpace desktop virtualization software was developed to tap into the unused power of PCs and efficiently divide their resources into independent virtual workspaces that give each user their own full PC experience...read more
Extension protocol
To get a great remote user experience, you need a great communications protocol. It's the way the screen image (as well as keyboard and mouse data) gets from the shared PC to the access device, and vice versa. NComputing developed its optimized and highly efficient User eXtension Protocol (UXP) for users who demand a rich PC experience. UXP can handle it all—including multimedia applications such as streaming video and Flash, plus USB...read more
Access devices
The access devices connect each user’s keyboard, monitor, and mouse to the shared PC. Each NComputing access device has ports for a keyboard, monitor, and mouse, but does not contain a CPU or memory...read more
Integrating with other virtualization technologies
NComputing vSpace can be used together with other virtualization technologies to address specific business needs. For example, machine virtualization software (from vendors including VMware and Microsoft) can be used to create multiple “virtual machines” running on a single server. Each virtual machine can run a fully independent operating system with its own unique set of applications.
NComputing Models
NComputing has various models, varying mostly in how the clients connect to the shared computer. Each of the three cabling options described below has its own advantages.
X-series, L-series, and U-series
Note:-If all of your users are clustered in workgroups and are all close to the shared computers, consider the X-series (lowest cost) or U-series (add one desktop at a time)
Note:-If you have users who need to be more than 10 meters away from the shared computer, choose the L-series L-130 & L-230
X-series(PCI Card)
X-series access devices connect via CAT 5 cable to a PCI card that is installed in a shared PC. Since there are typically two free PCI ports in a PC, the technology supports up to two PCI cards. The maximum distance between the PC and an access device is 10 m or about 30 ft. The X-series comes in kits which include one PC card and several access terminals, depending on the specific product.
X300 — 3 users per kit
X350 — 3 users per kit (updated version of the X300)
X550 — 5 users per kit
L-series(Ethernet)
Unlike the X-series, the NComputing L-series does not use a PCI card. L-series access devices connect each user’s keyboard, mouse and monitor back to the shared PC over standard Ethernet cables through a router or switch. An entry-level server supports approximately 30 users. The L-series comes in kits that include NComputing’s vSpace software and one access device.
L130
L230 — includes microphone and USB ports
U-series(USB)
The revolutionary new U-series are the simplest of all to connect, because they just snap into standard USB ports. There are no network switches to buy and no PCI cards to install. The USB does have a distance limitation , but for small installations the NComputing U-series offers high-def multimedia at rock-bottom prices

Advantages of NComputing
1)The cost of entry is very low. After the purchase of a single PC, NComputing’s solution costs only 20-30 percent of the cost of buying a separate PC for each added user.
2)It works with standard software. There is no need to buy specialized applications or retrain your technical staff or users.
3)This is the biggest leap forward in green computing. NComputing access devices draw less than five watts (and as little as one watt) of power for each user versus 110 watts for a typical PC—a 90% reduction.
4)It’s easy and fast to deploy and support. An NComputing solution can be implemented in a fraction of the time it would take to set up individual PCs to accommodate the same number of users.
5)PC upgrade cycles are easy and economical. With NComputing, a single PC upgrade increases performance for every virtual PC connected to it, and the NComputing access devices don’t go obsolete after a few years like PCs do.
6)It’s eco-friendly. In addition to reduced power consumption, Ncomputing technology reduces e-waste. The access devices do not need in be replaced in an upgrade cycle and they are built with far fewer and less environmentally harmful parts.
7)Ongoing operation and maintenance costs are extremely low. Since the access devices do not have a CPU, memory or moving parts like a PC has, their reliability is very high. Also, since there are fewer PCs to support, maintenance costs decline dramatically.
Global impact
Over 850 million PCs are turned on every day. If NComputing systems were used at a ratio of 6 NComputing devices to each PC:
~Energy use would decline by over 120 billion kilowatt hours per year
~CO2 emissions would decrease by 96 million metric tons - it's like planting 460 million trees
~E-waste would be reduced by 6.7 million metric tons
NComputing in India
NComputing came in India in 2007 and within 2 year,it became the second largest market for NComputing only after the US. Already, the company is in the forefront in education sector and closely working with various state governments and business organizations.
"India has been a perfect market for Ncomputing because of both lower cost and the lower operating expenses on power consumption. Because of tremendous growth of businesses within India and the investments here in the educational infrastructure, the country within just two years has become our second largest market" is a statement by Dukker CEO,NComputing.
NComputing has been a key partner with states like Maharashtra, Andra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and others in providing affordable and low-cost workstations for spreading computer literacy among rural masses. Apart from the education sector, the company wants to tap the financial and manufacturing sectors to market its technology.
Future aspects of NComputing
NComputing is growing rapidly worldwide, mostly in developing nations like India, Brazil and China. In India, NComputing plan is to aggressively grow in the education and business sectors. It is seeing great success with school systems throughout India & worldwide and in the business sector like manufacturing, healthcare, small/medium business, and call centres. It has been estimates that by 2013, 40% of all corporate desktops will be virtual desktops also the desktop virtualization market would be worth at least $1.8 billion by 2012.
